TMJ and jaw tension

Short answer

Jaw discomfort, clenching and clicking can involve the temporomandibular joint and nearby muscles. Posture and stress may play a part, but symptoms do not have one universal cause. Joe's Posture Reset may include individually appropriate jaw and neck bodywork. It does not replace dental care, a night guard or clinical diagnosis.

Why does the jaw get tight?

Jaw discomfort, clenching and clicking can involve the temporomandibular joint and nearby muscles. Posture and stress may play a part, but symptoms do not have one universal cause. Joe's Posture Reset may include individually appropriate jaw and neck bodywork. It does not replace dental care, a night guard or clinical diagnosis. Read the related educational guide.

How we work on it

  1. Assess jaw opening, head and neck position, and breathing.
  2. Release the jaw muscles and upper neck hands-on during a Posture Reset™.
  3. Retrain neck and breathing patterns so the jaw can rest.
  4. Coordinate. If you have a night guard or are working with a dentist or TMJ specialist, we work alongside them.

When to see a dentist or doctor first

See a dentist or doctor if your jaw locks open or closed, you have jaw pain after an injury, your bite has suddenly changed, or you have swelling or fever.

Common questions

Can posture affect TMJ?

Head and neck position changes how the jaw rests and how hard its muscles work, so correcting posture is often part of easing jaw tension.

Is jaw release painful?

It works on small, sensitive muscles, so we go gradually and adjust pressure as we go.

Will this replace my night guard?

No. A night guard protects teeth from grinding; our work addresses the muscle tension and posture around it.
